15 - Approaching Jersey - September 2003 Current
location: Approaching Jersey Nearly there! We have 9 more days to go until we arrive in Liverpool. Just 850 miles until Jersey - and 350 miles after that. And England is on the chart! We’re rapidly approaching the end of what has been an amazing experience. But, as with this whole race, nothing will be straightforward. We’re going to be about five days late into Jersey, so we’ll miss all the parties planned for our arrival. They’ll no doubt still go ahead, without any of the boats or their crew. We’ll probably arrive there on Monday evening or Tuesday morning next week, giving us about 24/36 hours off before the final push to Liverpool. It’s been an amazing journey across the North Atlantic. Whilst it has not been one of our warmest legs and the suntans are fading very quickly, it was a crossing I was really looking forward to, due to its place in history - the North Atlantic convoys, for example, and the route of the great liners from Southampton to New York. What’s made it really special, though, is the abundance of wildlife we’ve seen. Dolphins have joined us at least once a day; whales and birds have also been regular visitors. I had imagined it all to be very grey, but this part of the Atlantic is bursting with life. I’m really looking forward to the end of the race now though - the feeling is common to all the round-the-worlders. There’s a lot of talk about what it will be like to arrive in Liverpool - everyone is really looking forward to seeing friends and family. And the thought of a comfortable bed is very appealing. But that first meal is still being discussed! |
