- Round the World - July 2003 At
2145 GMT, the crewmembers on board the good ship London who have sailed all the
way from Liverpool on 28 October last year completed their circumnavigation of
the globe's lines of longitude. We started at 3 degrees west and we
crossed that line of longitude again after eight months and ten days of
generally heading west. Benny
and Ossie were at the helm when the line was crossed and celebrated with a can
of coke, which had been smuggled aboard for just such an occasion. The
other round the worlders celebrated in their own way, generally by sleeping
through the moment but no doubt with a quiet sense of achievement. For
Benny, it may be more than just a personal sense of achievement - we are looking
to see if he is the first transplant patient to sail round the world. There
are now two other round the world landmarks to look forward to – the first is
when we cross the line we made on the way out, known as tying the knot, which
will be in the next race to New York. The second will be when we step off the
boat in Liverpool. Well
done to skipper and all crew who have made it possible. (PS
